One of the ways John is able to cope with being wrongly imprisoned, and with the memories of dangerous years in the Middle East, is to write poetry and songs. Here we’ve attached two songs written by John and other friends as part of the Songwriting with Soldiers program.

Shine

We did 24 months in country
Fighting in the box and in Afghanistan
I spent day and night praying for his safety
When he came home I could not understand

Why doesn’t America see?
Doesn’t America know?
People like him could change the world if we let him

Rise, Shine
He put it all on the line
Did what we asked him to
So the least we could do
Give him Help, Give him Hope
Let him Shine

I laid my blood and treasure on the alter
I raised him to stand tall and to walk proud
I never dreamed that he would ever falter
He heard the call, he saw it all, where is he now?

Doesn’t America see?
Doesn’t America know?
People like him could change the world if we let him

Rise, Shine
He put it all on the line
Did what we asked him to
So the least we can do
Give him Help, Give him Hope
Let him Shine….
Shine….

Came home and just wanted a dad
Just wanted my boy ok
I Remember the day I got it , really got it, really got it
And started listening.

So he could Rise, Shine
We put it all on the line
He did what we asked him to
So the least we can do
Is give him Help, Give him Hope
Lift him up, let him know
He can shine    Shine

Rewired

(Whisper) What’s that? Aahh, no no stop

I wake you up to a scream
another nightmare not a dream
Dripping sweat it’s the same routine
Reliving those times and all I’ve seen
Bullets fly but they don’t touch you
Friends die, least it’s not you.
Hurts so bad ya just go numb, Forget you’re waiting for your Time to come

I need a rewire
I’m so tired of having these dreams
Chasing you chasing me
I don’t want to live a life under fire
I need to get rewired

Sam man wired me to be all I could be…
I learned to fight did it well I’ve seen the devil and I walked through hell
There’s wounds you can’t see
A river of tears drowning me
If only these memories would just let me be,
I need a rewire
I’m so tired of having these dreams
Chasing you chasing me
I don’t want to live a life on fire
I need to get rewired

When I pulled the trigger I couldn’t think twice
Didn’t I have to tough thru, now I pay the price
I could find the old me with the help of your love
I don’t need a handout, I just need your hand up

I need to get rewired
Im so tired of having these dreams
Chasing you chasing me
I don’t want to live a life with my heart on fire
I need to get rewired
Just need rewired
